Break Free From Health Anxiety: Reclaim Your Peace of Mind

Sarie Health Anxiety Blog

Is Health Anxiety Taking Over Your Life?

If you’re reading this, you may feel like health-related thoughts and worries are overshadowing your ability to truly live. Let me assure you, it doesn’t have to be this way. While I am currently undergoing cancer treatment - recovering from surgery as I write this - I want to share why health anxiety isn’t something I struggle with, even amidst uncertainty. Understanding this can help you break free from health anxiety and reclaim your peace of mind.

Thoughts About Health vs. Health Anxiety

Don’t get me wrong; I’m human, and thoughts about my health do arise. As I sit here, feeling sore and aware of the treatment ahead, I can acknowledge the uncertainties. However, I’ve discovered something powerful: these thoughts don’t have to dictate my experience of life. Life is for living, not for endlessly thinking and worrying.

The Power of Innate Wisdom

Last night, I listened to Syd Banks, a renowned teacher of The Three Principles. He reminded me of a profound truth: when you look in the mirror, you’re seeing the wisest person there is. Beneath your personal thoughts lies pure wisdom - a wellspring of peace and guidance available to us all.

Often, we get caught up in the whirlwind of our personal thoughts and perceptions. Why is this problematic? Because those thoughts are just that: made-up perceptions, products of our imagination creating scenarios about what might happen. The truth is, we can never know for sure what the future holds. When we dwell on these thoughts, we’re not living in reality; we’re living in a fear-driven illusion.

The Key to Breaking Free from Health Anxiety

You might think, But these thoughts feel so real! How can I ignore them? Here’s the thing: you don’t need to ignore your thoughts.

Instead, recognise them for what they are - just thoughts. They have no power to affect your life unless you hold onto them and treat them as truths.

Take my own experience with surgery, for example. Before the operation, anxious thoughts crept in: How much pain will I feel? How long will recovery take? Yet, my actual experience turned out to be entirely different (and thankfully, much better!). Even if things had gone as my thoughts predicted, all my pre-emptive worrying wouldn’t have changed the outcome. What’s more, it would have robbed me of peace in the present moment.

Trusting the Present Moment

Instead of preparing for every possible outcome, I’ve learned to show up moment by moment, guided by the innate wisdom within me. I didn’t need to rehearse feelings of pain or discomfort ahead of time - and many of the feelings I’ve experienced weren’t even what I expected.

When you let go of trying to control or predict the future, you open yourself to a quieter mind, where peace and clarity reside. This is where true freedom from health anxiety begins.

Are we overcomplicating mental health?

The continuous spiral of talking about mental illness and neglecting to discuss mental health that’s within us all!

Finding herself in a mental hospital for a month aged 22, her worst fears of going crazy had come true! Sarie truly believed she was broken for many years, and now sees that this was in part due to massively over complicating what it meant be a human being. After a long period of exploring and training as a psychotherapist, still burning out every 18 months for another ten years, Sarie finally found the answer, and now shares the surprising simplicity of it all to help others get the same relief.

Sarie has trained as a transactional analysis psychotherapist, as well as working and training in many other therapeutic disciplines, such as NLP, CBT, DBT and hypnotherapy. Sarie is also an author, celebrity coach and therapist, working with thousands of people a year, of all ages, all over the world. Her main aim is to help them really see the simplicity and beauty behind human nature, getting out of their heads and into their lives, being able to see that the inside out nature of life really is a gift. This removes limitations and stories they may hold about themselves, and as a result finding an ease and contentment in life they often never knew was possible.
