What Does 'Showing Up' In Life Actually Mean?

showing up in life blog

When I talk with clients and members about “showing up in life,” I’m not talking about faking it until you make it or white-knuckling yourself through life’s challenges. For me, showing up means something much simpler - and much kinder.

Embracing the Full Spectrum of Feelings

Being human means experiencing all kinds of feelings. Yet, so many of us are scared of emotions, even though they’re not harmful. Sure, they might be uncomfortable, but they won’t harm us.

Our perception of feelings is often shaped by what we’ve learned. For example, I never felt comfortable with anger, so when it surfaced, I’d block it and bottle it up. But those suppressed feelings didn’t just disappear - they transformed into anxiety instead!

Feelings come from thoughts, and since we can’t stop thinking, feelings will always show up.

Avoiding them isn’t the answer.

The Unique Way We Experience Emotions

Did you know that the physical sensation of adrenaline during extreme sports is the same as what we feel during anxiety?

Some people love that adrenaline rush and even crave it. Others label it as fear or panic.

This shows how personal and unique our emotional experiences are. We give feelings names, but the way we perceive them is entirely our own, shaped by our reality and perspective.

What Showing Up Means to Me

For me, showing up means going with the flow, moment by moment, regardless of how I feel. I no longer make or cancel plans based on how I think I might feel later. Instead, I show up and allow myself to experience whatever I’m feeling.

Feelings are fluid - they come and go, changing from one moment to the next. So why try to plan life around emotions we can’t predict? I used to cancel plans whenever I felt anxious, fearing I’d feel the same way later. But that only made me feel worse - like I was letting people down and missing out.

Feelings don’t define us, and having them doesn’t make us inadequate. It makes us human.

Staying Present: The Key to Peace

When we’re present and in the moment, we feel good. Anxiety, overwhelm, and suffering don’t exist in the now. They only exist in the stories we create about the past or the future.

Every single one of us - without exception - has an innate sense of wellbeing, peace, and groundedness. But we often talk ourselves out of it with fearful or negative thoughts.

Are we overcomplicating mental health?

The continuous spiral of talking about mental illness and neglecting to discuss mental health that’s within us all!

Finding herself in a mental hospital for a month aged 22, her worst fears of going crazy had come true! Sarie truly believed she was broken for many years, and now sees that this was in part due to massively over complicating what it meant be a human being. After a long period of exploring and training as a psychotherapist, still burning out every 18 months for another ten years, Sarie finally found the answer, and now shares the surprising simplicity of it all to help others get the same relief.

Sarie has trained as a transactional analysis psychotherapist, as well as working and training in many other therapeutic disciplines, such as NLP, CBT, DBT and hypnotherapy. Sarie is also an author, celebrity coach and therapist, working with thousands of people a year, of all ages, all over the world. Her main aim is to help them really see the simplicity and beauty behind human nature, getting out of their heads and into their lives, being able to see that the inside out nature of life really is a gift. This removes limitations and stories they may hold about themselves, and as a result finding an ease and contentment in life they often never knew was possible.
