How Do We Get Present? (Spoiler: You Don’t Have To!)

Getting present

One of the most common questions I get asked is: How do I get present? And honestly, it’s one of the biggest misunderstandings I see.

As a society, we often talk about being present as if it’s something we need to do - as though presence is a skill to master, a practice to refine, or something that requires effort.

We equate it with meditation, mindfulness, or some kind of deliberate activity. But here’s the truth: Presence is our default.

We Were Born Present

Think about young children. They cry, they laugh, they love, they scream, they shout, they get upset, they have fun. They move effortlessly from feeling to feeling without holding on to any of them. And in between? They’re fully present. They don’t get stuck because they’re not analysing their emotions or trying to control them.

But as we grow, we start generating layers and layers of thought. We begin believing that we need to manage our minds, control our emotions, and work to be present. And that’s where we get lost.

You Can’t Think Your Way to Presence

Most people try to get present by thinking their way into it. They believe they need to do something to achieve it. But the irony is: You don’t need to do anything to get present.

Presence isn’t something you chase. It’s something you fall back into the moment you stop chasing.

Noticing You’re Not Present = Being Present

This is where the Three Principles shift everything. Instead of asking “How do I get present?” - a better question is “What takes me away from presence?”

Because here’s the magic: The moment you notice you’re not present, you’re already back in presence.

It’s not about striving to be more present. It’s about seeing how you already are. The more you recognise that presence is your default, the more you naturally settle into it. It’s not about doing more - it’s about doing less.

Get Curious: Presence is Already Yours

Instead of trying to be present, try getting curious about how often you already are. Throughout your day, you naturally fall into moments of presence - you just don’t notice them because your focus is on when you aren’t present.

So, rather than making presence another thing to achieve, start seeing how it’s already happening. And if you want to explore this understanding on a deeper level, this is exactly what we explore inside my membership.

Are we overcomplicating mental health?

The continuous spiral of talking about mental illness and neglecting to discuss mental health that’s within us all!

Finding herself in a mental hospital for a month aged 22, her worst fears of going crazy had come true! Sarie truly believed she was broken for many years, and now sees that this was in part due to massively over complicating what it meant be a human being. After a long period of exploring and training as a psychotherapist, still burning out every 18 months for another ten years, Sarie finally found the answer, and now shares the surprising simplicity of it all to help others get the same relief.

Sarie has trained as a transactional analysis psychotherapist, as well as working and training in many other therapeutic disciplines, such as NLP, CBT, DBT and hypnotherapy. Sarie is also an author, celebrity coach and therapist, working with thousands of people a year, of all ages, all over the world. Her main aim is to help them really see the simplicity and beauty behind human nature, getting out of their heads and into their lives, being able to see that the inside out nature of life really is a gift. This removes limitations and stories they may hold about themselves, and as a result finding an ease and contentment in life they often never knew was possible.
