How Understanding Thought Can Reduce Overwhelm & Anxiety

understanding can reduce overwhelm and anxiety

Have you ever found yourself spiralling into overwhelm before the day has even begun?
Or felt anxiety creep in seemingly out of nowhere, leaving you exhausted and frustrated with yourself?

If you answered yes (even with a tired nod), you’re not alone - and you’re not broken.

In a new free mini course, I've shared how it’s simply a misunderstanding of thought. And once we see that, everything can shift.  I'm sharing a little bit to touch on what I covered in the first video in this new article and of course, you can go on to access the mini course for all three videos included if you haven't already...

The Power of Thought: A Fresh Perspective
Our feelings of anxiety and overwhelm don’t come from our circumstances, other people, or the big scary "what ifs" looming in our future. They come from thought.

We’re either in our lives, living moment-to-moment, or we’re in our heads, tangled up in past regrets or future fears. And when we’re in our heads, believing every dramatic thought that floats by, we can feel anxious, panicked, or stuck - even if everything around us seems fine.

Thoughts Are Not Facts
They’re not truths. They’re not predictions of what will happen. They’re just thoughts - transient, neutral, and completely outside of our control. And yet, we bring them to life through imagination and emotion.

We’re taught to be creative from a young age, but no one warns us that we might also get creative with our fears. We play out worst-case scenarios like Netflix dramas in our heads and then wonder why we feel terrible. But the solution isn’t to stop thinking (impossible) or force positive thoughts (exhausting). It’s to see thought for what it truly is - and, in the gentlest way possible, stop taking it so seriously.

The Bee and the Beekeeper
Imagine you’re sitting in a garden and a bee buzzes near your head. You start wafting and panicking, and soon it feels like that one bee is ruining your whole day. But a beekeeper could walk through a swarm of bees and not flinch. The difference isn’t in the bees (or the thoughts), but in our response to them.

Your anxious thoughts aren’t dangerous. They’re just buzzing. You don’t need to chase them away or jump on every single one. You can let them be (buzzz!).

So... what do we do?
The invitation to understand more isn’t to try harder or fix yourself.

It’s to get curious.
Notice when you’re in your head vs. in your life.
Recognise that anxiety is just a signal that your thinking has sped up.

And most importantly, know that you don’t have to follow every thought to the end of the world and back.

There’s nothing wrong with you. There’s just something new to see and understand.

Are we overcomplicating mental health?

The continuous spiral of talking about mental illness and neglecting to discuss mental health that’s within us all!

Finding herself in a mental hospital for a month aged 22, her worst fears of going crazy had come true! Sarie truly believed she was broken for many years, and now sees that this was in part due to massively over complicating what it meant be a human being. After a long period of exploring and training as a psychotherapist, still burning out every 18 months for another ten years, Sarie finally found the answer, and now shares the surprising simplicity of it all to help others get the same relief.

Sarie has trained as a transactional analysis psychotherapist, as well as working and training in many other therapeutic disciplines, such as NLP, CBT, DBT and hypnotherapy. Sarie is also an author, celebrity coach and therapist, working with thousands of people a year, of all ages, all over the world. Her main aim is to help them really see the simplicity and beauty behind human nature, getting out of their heads and into their lives, being able to see that the inside out nature of life really is a gift. This removes limitations and stories they may hold about themselves, and as a result finding an ease and contentment in life they often never knew was possible.
